We are featuring the amazing work of 50+ Member artists. Scarves, shawls, wall pieces, tapestries, rugs, felt, yarn & MUCH, MUCH, MORE! Fall Fiber Fiesta is an in-store event, and open during all business hours: Friday and Saturday: 10am-5pm every weekend! We are also going to have extended shopping hours the third week of December: the 18th-23rd and open the weekend after Thanksgiving! Please join us for this shopping spectacular! “El Rito Loom” by Caorline Dechert“El Rito loom” usually conjures up the picture of a traditional counterbalance walking loom made to the design taught at Northern New Mexico College in classes past. From the mid-1970’s into the 1980’s, though, 45 very different, truly extraordinary looms were made in El Rito by Jack Edwards. Edwards brought his engineering skills and keen eyes to the task of designing the perfect loom for his wife, renowned tapestry weaver Viki Edwards. While she managed to compensate comfortably for quirks in the looms she used, he saw ways to make a more precise design to control precise weaving. His patented countermarche mechanism and other ingeniously engineered functional details, combined with his skilled woodworking and artistic touch, combined in a series of looms that won acclaim in periodicals as diverse as Fine Woodworking, Machine Design, and The Weaver’s Journal. Each of the 45 looms is unique, most made to spec for their original owners, but from number 10 onward, most fall into two general categories: gallery or production models. Gallery models feature more fine woodwork than “production” models, but the production models have a clean, form-follows-function beauty of their own. All weave like a dream. Both types include the patented countermarche mechanism that ensures harnesses remain perfectly parallel as they rise and fall. This is achieved through a system of cables and pulleys unlike those on any other loom. Also, each wooden harness is married to a metal counterweight or idler bar (see photo, with a harness and its idler bar marked with blue tape). When the harness proper rises, the idler bar falls an equivalent amount, and vice versa. Both harness and idler bar can be attached to the loom’s treadles. If the harness is to rise when a treadle is pressed, then the idler bar is attached to that treadle. If the harness should fall, it is attached directly to the treadle. These key adaptations to traditional countermarche design ensure that the warp threads that rise in the shed and those that fall are maintained in perfect relation to each other. Another key adaptation is in treadle design. There is a major mechanical advantage to positioning treadles at the rear of a loom, but this tends to make the shed at the front uneven, with more drift in the angle of individual warp strands. Moving the treadles forward perfects the shed angle, but loses the mechanical advantage. Edwards solved this problem by moving the treadles back, but equipping each treadle with an inset compensator (see photo) that maintains a perfect angle.

Starting with number 10 (shown in the photos), the treadle frame includes cutouts to the right side that allow a treadle to be locked in position, leaving the shed effortlessly open. When the weaver is working tapestry across a wide width (number 10 has a 72 inch weaving width), thisis a major advantage. Number 10 still includes ratcheted gears, but later models had an Edwards-designed worm gear. This allows perfect control of tension and easy adjustment both forward and back. The end result is a loom that keeps perfect tension along an entire warp; that opens a generous, even shed to the bitter end of the warp; that is quiet, smooth, and reliable. Number 10, now mine, was originally commissioned by a production weaver who used it for decades, but it shows few signs of wear after 42 years of hard work. OPEN WEAVE WITH DAIN DALLER
Ever wanted to learn to weave? How about trying a more advanced weaving technique like shadow weave or woven shibori? Now’s your chance!
EVFAC is now offering an ongoing "pay-as-you-go" weaving class for students of all skill levels. Every Saturday from 1-3:30 Dain will be available to help you with whatever weaving technique you desire from beginner to advanced.
Attend as many or as few as you want. Class size is limited to 4 at a time due to our social distancing protocol. To reserve your spot, please email Dain at warpboard@yahoo.com no later than 4 PM on the Friday before you wish to attend. It is alright if you can't make it some Saturdays. Simply email each Friday to let us know you plan on coming back and we will leave your project on the loom waiting for you. Sorry, but tapestry techniques will not be taught in this class.
