March’s Natural Dye & Eco-Print class with Tyrrell Tapaha

In Tyrrell’s class we dyed Churro yarn hues of blue, green, purple, pink and yellow. In between baths we rolled up eco-prints with mixtures of local plants and common dye plants. The results were fun! Like opening a present each day. 

We learned some things about the Navajo-Churro sheep and the plants in Navajo culture, and just some interesting sheep facts in general. This might be old news to yee sheep people reading this, but we learned that the sheep who produce the best wool are the castrated males, because their hormones are the most stable. We heard about how particular the the range is to different qualities of fleece, how connected the sheep are to the land. Healthy sheep - healthy fleece - come from healthy land.

The next class in our 4 class series in conjunction with the Horizon’s… exhibit will be Roy Kady’s Navajo Horse Cinch Weaving class, April 25th-28th. There’s still a couple spots left!

Mini Churro Week Begins This Sunday! 

From Sheep to Yarn!

This Sunday April 7th there will be a sheep shearing at Los Luceros Historic Site as part of their Dawn til Dusk event. The Site will be open from 6:30am - 7:30pm, with trails and buildings open to explore. NM residents get in free! Get there first thing for an early morning bird watch! 

Shearing begins around 7 or 8 and goes until the herd is sheared. EVFAC will be there cleaning and doing an initial carding of the wool. There will be food and vending, including some EVFAC members (:

Then, the following Thursday and Friday, April 11th and 12th, Carol Nieukirk will be teaching 2 classes demonstrating with students the washing, picking and carding processes for the Navajo-Churro fleece (from Los Luceros) to prepare it for spinning or felting. 

On Saturday April 13, Glenna Dean will be running her Spinning Adventures from noon to 3pm for those of you who’d like help spinning.

Youth Summer Fiber Art Camp at EVFAC!

By next month’s newsletter, all the details will be in place, but for now, we wanted to drop a little peek into what we have planned for June and our fiber art summer camp for youth ages 9-17!

EVFAC will be hosting a 4 week summer camp during the month of June. The program will run Monday through Thursday, 10am-4pm each week, with 3 classes rotating each day. Classes will focus on: ecology and natural dyeing, spinning, knitting and weaving; as well as screen printing and other fiber-arts related projects and presentations. Students can sign up for individual weeks or all 4 weeks - projects will be different each week. Breaks, snacks and lunch included. 

The program will be hosted at EVFAC with the possibility of field trips. There is a drop off hour from 9am to 10pm each day, and a pick up hour from 4pm to 5pm each day. 

There are three teachers for each week, accompanied by a youth mentor from the Northern Youth Project. We can accept up to 18 students per week. The cost of the program is completely free, after a one-time $25 registration fee to hold your child’s spot. This fee is good for 1 week or all 4 weeks.

Registration will begin Wednesday May 1st. 

We are still looking for the following roles:

  • Screenprinting teachers for some or all of the weeks. This is a paid position.

  • Volunteers to make lunches and to hang out with the kids during drop off and pick up hours - 9am-10am and 4pm-5pm each day of camp (Mon-Thurs). This is unstructured time for them, no teaching necessary.

Around Town
 

Over the past two years, SAR has been working with the Pueblo Fiber Arts Guild and the Poeh Cultural Center to help organize and support the annual Pueblo Fiber Arts Show. The show, which is in its 13th year, is a celebration of Pueblo fiber arts including, but not limited to, weaving, embroidery, sewing, and basketry.

In anticipation of this year’s show, the 2024 Native Arts Speaker Series is dedicated to facilitating the exploration of Pueblo fiber arts in the Southwest. Pueblo fiber artists from across mediums discuss the past, present, and future of fiber arts, revitalization efforts, and the ways in which these rich traditions continue to be passed down from generation to generation.

All events are free to the public and take place at the School for Advanced Research unless otherwise indicated.
